The original portrait of Barbara (above) appears to have been rendered in charcoal and this excellent reproduction came to me courtesy of cousin Dr Richard Banfield-Mumb in Austria.

My father's father's father's mother was born Barbara Mumb (Baroness) von Mühlheim, but was called "Bettie" and, having been widowed twice, and married 3 times, was also known as the Baronin von Mainau, the Baronin von Fingerlin-Bisching, and the Marquessa Zappi. The von Mühlheim predicate was most often spelled as stated, but modern family generations in Austria spell it Mühlhaim. As was the fashion in her day, her name also appeared with French titles, as on her calling card (below), when she was married to Nikolaus Baron von Mainau (1836 - 1841). The calling card reads, "La Baronne de Mainau, née de Mumb" and has been digitally enhanced from a computer scan of a very dark photocopy of a photograph of the original.

THE VON FINGERLIN SONS: EDWIN HEINRICH MORIZ, ROGER,
and EDGAR MAXIMILIAN, 1849 (above)

Roger (Baron) von Fingerlin-Büsching :

Edwin Heinrich Moriz (Baron) von Fingerlin-Büsching : (The following is from the city register of the parish archive of Worblingen, translated by PdG) "In the year 1844 on January 26th at 4am, was here born and on February 16th at 2pm was christened in the castle: Edwin Heinrich Moriz, legitimate child of the Baron Edgar von Fingerlin and of the Baroness von Fingerlin née Barbara von Mumb from here. Godfather and witnesses are Heinrich Baron von Fingerlin, banker in Paris, and Miss Anna von Reichlin, unmarried daughter of the Baron von Reichlin from Konstanz, and furthermore, Moriz Macaire, banker from Konstanz." Apparently EHMvF was named for those present at his christening, Moriz being a family friend/associate present at a number of family events, and Heinrich being, possibly his father's uncle (Kasper Heinrich) or first cousin. Edwin was only 19 months old when his father died, and 4 years old when his mother married Giovanni "Girolamo" Battista Marquis Zappi, Commandant of the Papal Guard in Rome. We believe that from the age of 13 he attended school with his brothers at Frascati, but he died at the age of 16, on 14 April 1860, in a fall from a 200-foot tall rock, as described later by his brother Edgar. He was buried in a vault under the main aisle of the Cathedral at Frascati (Photo of cathedral, and adjacent words by his brother ) .

A TIMELINE OF EVENTS IN THE LIFE OF BARBARA MUMB VON MUHLHEIM
1818 Barbara is born on 20 June in Padova (Padua) Italy, the second of four children born to mother Aloisia "Louise" Karolina von Schimmelfenning van der Oye and father Franz Mumb von Müehlheim, a General in the Austrian-Hungarian army. Barbara's ancestors can be located on a growing pedigree chart at this site. Cousin Richard has already provided a credible link to the Schimmelfenning branch and there is an extensive Schimmelfenning site on the www. From data at that site I will eventually be extending Barbara's pedigree chart back to 14th Century Netherlands, via Austria, Bohemia, Poland, et al] . At the time of her birth, Barbara already had a brother, Ferdinand Anton Mumb von Mühlheim who was born 5 Feb 1817, also in Padova.
1819
(age: 1)
Barbara's brother Heinrich Mumb von Mühlheim is born on 12 September in Padova. He was later to become intendent of the Imperial Palace of Venice and after that, intendent of the Imperial Palace of Miramare at Trieste. The latter position may have been nearly contemporaneous with Miramare's famous occupants: Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria and his wife Princess Charlotte of Belgium, more well-known as the ill-fated Emperor Maximilian of Mexico and his Empress Carlotta.
 1826
(age: 7)
Barbara's sister Adelaide Mumb von Mühlheim is born on 4 May in Padova.
 1836
(age: 17)
Barbara marries Nikolaus Baron von Mainau on the 10th of February and they live at his castle on Mainau Island on the Bodensee in the southwest of Germany [Today the island is owned by Countess Sonja and Count Lennart Bernadotte af Wisborg and is surrounded by botanical gardens open to the public]. Barbara and Nikolaus have 2 daughters, Nathalie and Marie, dates of birth not currently known.
 1840?
1841
(age: 23)
Barbara's husband Nikolaus is said to have gone insane and that may have figured in his death in this year.
1842
(age: 23-24)
A marriage contract is drawn up on 24 March, and shortly thereafter Barbara marries Edgar Baron von Fingerlin-Bisching. Their first child, Roger Baron von Fingerlin-Bisching is born on 26 October at Gaillingen, Germany. Edgar re-purchases Worblingen castle, a property that had been owned by his family earlier in the 19th Century.
1844
(age: 25)
Edgar and Barbara's second child, Edwin Heinrich Moriz Baron von Fingerlin-Bisching, is born on 26 January at 4 AM at Worblingen castle. Young Edwin is christened on 16 February at 2 PM and the parish archives of Worblingen note that "Godfather and witnesses are Heinrich Baron von Fingerlin, banker in Paris and Miss Anna von Reichlin, unmarried daughter of the Baron von Reichlin from Konstanz, and furthermore Moriz Macaire, banker from Konstanz."
1845
(age: 26-27)

Edgar and Barbara's third child, Lavinia Mathilde Anna Baroness von Fingerlin is born on 26 February at 5 AM at Worblingen castle. Young Lavinia is christened on 25 March at 2 PM at the parish church and the parish archives note that "Godfather and witnesses are Alfred Baron von Fingerlin from Wien with Mathilda young Baroness von Fingerlin from Paris, lady-in-waiting to the Duchess de Nemours, and furthermore Moriz Macaire, banker from Konstanz."

On 22 August at 6 PM, Edgar dies of gangrene after a hunting mishap, 2 days previous, in which Edgar's brother Alfred accidently shot him in the leg. Barbara, 3 months pregnant with her and Edgar's fourth child, is widowed again. Her mother joins her to assist in settling the estate.

 1846
(age: 27)
9 February, Edgar and Barbara's fourth child, Edgar Maximilian Baron von Fingerlin-Büsching, is born in Konstanz. Edgar and Barbara's third child, Lavinia, dies in Konstanz in this year.

 1848
(30)
27 July, Barbara marries Giovanni "Girolamo" Battista Marquis Zappi, Commandant of the Papal Guard in Rome.
 1854
(36)
Barbara and Girolamo's only son, "Luigi" Marquis Zappi is born.
1854-1870
(age: 36-52)

Barbara raises her son Luigi Zappi in Bologna Italy, while her husband remains in Rome, Gaeta, and other sites, defending the Pope. Meanwhile her von Fingerlin sons, Roger, Edwin and Edgar Maximilian, are attending boarding schools in Germany, Switzerland, Rome and Frascati. According to the Zappi family website, later in life "Luigi distinguished himself as Imola's Mayor and, in 1890, the citizens of Bologna elected him to the Italian Parliament, where he would remain for twenty years until, in 1910, he was appointed Lifetime Senator by the King of Italy."

Barbara's second son, Edwin, dies 14 June 1860, in a fall from a 200 foot cliff and is buried in a vault under the main aisle of the cathedral at Frascati, Italy. The fall was witnessed by Edwin's younger brother Edgar.

Barbara died and/or is buried at Überlingen am Bodensee in Germany.

MY EUROPEAN COUSINS/CONTRIBUTORS: Thanks to cousins Paolo deGasperis in Italy and Dr Richard Banfield-Mumb von Mulhaim (the modern spelling) in Austria for providing their untold hours of research, photo reproductions, and family stories. Their contributions have made this page and many others possible. This page is a work in progress, and there is more information to add including a reference to Barbara in romantic literature as a tall, graceful blonde with a magnificent figure.

Before Paolo found me through a Google search for "von Fingerlin," on 26 February 2001, my sister and I had wondered if he existed. Our great grandfather Edgar Maximilian von Fingerlin-Büsching had written of his brother Roger 's death with Emperor Maximilian in Mexico and we thought that it might be possible that Roger had had progeny. As Paolo informed us, Roger's demise was not as reported (but that is another mystery yet to be unraveled), and he did have a daughter Artemisia and she was Paolo's great grandmother.

Before Paolo arrived with the full name of Roger and Edgar's mother, all I had was a 1919 obituary that said Edgar Maximilian von Fingerlin-Büsching's mother was the Baroness von Mühlheim. Edgar had also written that his step-father was the General Marquis Zappi so I found the Zappi family website, but it misidentified Mumb as "Nump." So in February came the thankfully, somewhat-unique name of Mumb. I was able to locate and query a young granddaughter of cousin Richard and she connected us. The 3 of us are all descended from Barbara's parents, General Franz Mumb von Mühlhaim (born 30 March 1754, Chrudim, Bohemia) and Aloisia Karolina Schimmelpenning van der Oye (born 22 April 1790, Vienna).

I connected Paolo and Richard last year and I understand they met in Tuscany (Toscano) just a week ago.
