THE CHILDREN of JOSE CAETANO de FRAGA and MARIA CONCEÇÃO FRAGUEIRA:

Including my Great Grandfather Antonio, the 5 brothers and 1 sister de Fraga were born on the westernmost Azores Island of Flores to Jose Caetano de Fraga and Maria Conceção Fragueira. The children independently immigrated to the USA around the turn of the 20th Century. All, except Antonio, settled in northern California, and some of their surnames changed with their new nationalities to Frago, to Fraga, and, perhaps, to Fragie.

Antonio "Tony" Frago: see the Frago-Jinkerson page.

Manuel Jose Frago (with his wife Maria Jose de Gloria Laranjo):
Great great uncle Manuel was born in Fajã Grande on Flores Island, the Azores, on 6 March 1877. He married Mary Jose de Gloria Laranjo on 28 April 1898 and in 1899 sailed off without her to the United States. He stayed a while with his brother (my great grandfather) Antonio & his family in Two Dot, Montana, and was there when the 2000 Census was taken. At that time it was reported that Manuel was a farm laborer, could read and write, but could not speak English. He sent for his wife in 1905 and they settled in Turlock, California, where he was a farmer and enjoyed gardening and fishing. Their 4 children were: Mary Josephine, Jose Alfred, Adeline Margaret, and Zelda Antoinette.

John de Fraga: 'Had 3 daughters: Conceção "Constance", Mary, and Zulmira.

Jose "Joe" Fraga: 'Lived for a while with his brother Francisco in Oakland, California (where they may have been in the dairy business) and with his brother Manuel in Turlock. Joe moved to Fresno, California where he and his wife Adelaida lived on San Pablo Avenue and had 3 children: Joseph and twins David and Angelina.

Francisco "Frank" Frago ('not sure of the form his surname took): 'Came to California and lived for a while with his brother Jose in Oakland. I don't know if he had a new family here, but he left 2 daughters in the Azores: Maria da Parmo (who married a Ramos, was widowed, then married a Fagundes) and Ana Fragueira de Fraga (who never married but took care of her grandfather Jose Caetano de Fraga in his old age at the family home in Fajã Grande). Francisco Frago died in French Camp, California.

Maria "Molly" de Fraga ('not sure of the form her surname took): 'Said to have married a Silva and died in a sanitarium in Ukiah, California in 1915. One might assume then, that she died of tuberculosis.
