Daddy painted cars and during WWII painted camouflage on the roofs of aircraft factories. Mom designed 2 houses and countless remodels. She drew, glazed and embellished ceramics, made tables and lamps out of unlikely materials, painted signs for the family businesses, and was quite a beauty herself. Aunt Pat was a nightclub photographer and Uncle Nick was almost a cartoonist for Walt Disney. So I was genetically predisposed toward the visual, you see.
When I was 4 we moved from Los Angeles to Mendocino County where I was the first child in my 2nd Grade class to evolve from depicting trees as circles-on-sticks to drawing trees with limbs and gnarly roots. In junior high school I began drawing house plans. In high school I became a fan of the photography of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn mainly through their work in Vogue magazine. Meanwhile I got by with my point-and-shoot camera, taking snapshots for the high school yearbook. In 1965 cousin Marcus gave me my first 35mm camera: a Kodak Signet 35 rangefinder. In 1964 I was a finalist in Mademoiselle magazine's annual college staff competition. I attended Humboldt State University where I received a BA degree in Art and gained an abiding appreciation of the elements of design. My deep gratitude to Professors Glenn Berry (who took what I thought was my unfinished painting and placed it in a student show, providing a valuable lesson in when-to-stop-painting); James Born (who rewarded my most brutally honest self-portraits); Reese Bullen (who provided me a rapturous appreciation of the calligraphic line); Max Butler (who illuminated my sense of composition by demonstrating the power of negative space); Tom Knight (whose great good humor and encouragement I still treasure. "You respect the equipment, and the equipment will respect you."); and sculptor Mel Schuler.
In San Francisco I worked briefly for Helen Johnstone at her seminal Focus Gallery on Union Street , but spent most of my adult working days and/or nights as a conscientious civil servant, continuing my photography and exploring new media in my own time. I spent a few years as a new music DJ/producer at KUSF FM and as co-director of Nanny Goat Hill Gallery. Currently I do free-lance graphic design and copywriting, and perform shipping feats for Computers & Music.Domestic partner Joe West, tabby cat Buttercup, and I share an odd box of a house, situated on a little-known San Francisco slope, with big west windows that look out through a wind-buffered eucalyptus tree to the Farralon Islands and Point Reyes. Most of my still life photography takes place in the filtered light of these windows.
STATEMENT: "Art is nature seen through a temperament" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion" - Francis Bacon
"An artist cannot speak about his art any more than a plant can discuss horticulture." - Jean Cocteau
...Nevertheless, since I have vocal chords, opposable thumbs, and a computer keyboard and my hydrangea does not I will go on: With the premise that ART exists in the perception of ART, it has been my pleasure to perceive with visual excitement and visceral satisfaction, not only the product called ART, but also, its exquisite design elements, which might include a stark field of dark taupe; an array of black marks; a random shard of cadmium yellow; a suggestive slice of a perfectly formed calligraphic line; an odd juxtaposition of architectural surface and detail; a reflection of cypress splayed across the cobalt blue arc of Chevrolet fender; or a solitary, heartbreakingly delicate leaf...
and now I will go have a seance with my hydrangea.
Susan Todd-Raque, an independent scholar on photography and co-founder of Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Inc, served as juror for Art & Antiques magazine's Second Annual Photography Competition and commented on "641" (above) as reported in the June 2002 issue of Art & Antiques: "This could be an abstract painting. There's a textural quality to it that adds to the painterly aspects."
From the San Francisco Examiner, June 25, 1983, "Tortilla makes a splash at the Arts Festival" by Al Morch: "Second-place photography ($500) went to an even more undiscernible subject by Edward E Stern, who specializes in natural forms. I liked Jane Marie Cleveland's delicately fragile color photograph 'Composition with Two Rose Petals.' It took third place ($250), but I have a feeling if it had been printed in a larger format, the judges would have awarded it first prize."
The following appraisal was overheard at the jurying for the 1983 Pulse of the City Exhibition:
Gallerist Marian Parmenter: "Well, of course they're pretty..."
Noted photographer/professor Jack Welpott: "Wait, these are heavy-weight."
